Free iPhone Sign Of The Times

by Ed Tsunoda on April 21, 2014

Apple used to distinguish their products from the schlock by keeping the price point high enough to make you feel special…but how special can it be when bazillions of people have the same phone? Hence…free iPhone:

For years, the iPhone managed to maintain its aura of “first and still the best” among smartphones; any kind of discounting would be to concede that the iPhone’s aura was fading. But fade it has as new models are released year after year with incremental improvements rather than radical new features. Being boring hasn’t hurt the sheer number of iPhones Apple is selling. But growth in iPhone sales has slowed. The 5s has gone from “status symbol” to “standard issue” with remarkable speed, which leaves Apple with a tough problem to solve.
