Direct Connect Dies And Takes Boolean Google Searches With It

by Ed Tsunoda on June 23, 2014

You may not have known this, but if you are working on your business web site SEO, you should because it affects how Google reads search inquiries and has for some time. Back when Google launched Google+, they wanted people to be able to “plus” search terms to connect directly to the entities Google+ page (.eg., +youtube would take you to youtube’s Google+ page). However, to accomplish this, they had to turn off using Boolean expressions (e.g., searching for David Wright +Mets to find search results for David Wright that also include the term Mets)) to perform more specific searches. Direct Connect is now o9fficially dead…but there’s no indication that Boolean search tools will ever make a full comeback.

Cast your mind back to November 2011, only a few months after the launch of Google+. That’s when Google made one of its biggest Google+ification moves. It demoted a long-standing search feature involving the plus symbol so that searchers could instead more easily reach new “Google+ Pages” that had been launched. Today, this “Direct Connect” feature is forgotten and broken.
